Fernanda Broocke is a tattoo artist based in Brazil who creates dark imagery, drawing inspiration from medieval artworks, etching and bones. Fernanda will be joining us again from the 25th of June 2018 to the 2nd of July 2018. We asked her a few questions to get to know her a little better.
How did you become a tattoo artist?
I’ve always liked arts in general and had the habit of drawing ever since I was a kid because of my mom and dad (she’s a photographer and he’s a painter), but the years passed by and i ended up studying photography and filmmaking.
After a while I had a back problem that left me in bed for 5 months and I started drawing again because of that. I began to study tattooing techniques and when I got better, I became an apprentice at a tattoo shop. I’ve been living that ever since and I can’t imagine myself doing anything else.
Which artist’s work do you admire?
I’m crazy about illuminated manuscripts from Medieval times, Dürer, Gustave Doré, Caravaggio, Artemisia Gentileschi and Vermeer.
Illustrators: Dragunas (@jmdragunas), Godmachine (@godmachine), Adrian Baxter (@adrianbaxter). Tattoo related artists are Massimo Gurnari (@massimogurnari) Mishla (@mishlatattooillustration) Robert Borbás (@grindesign), Ruco (@ruco__) and my dear friends Luna Lu (@lunalu.tattoo) and Felipe César (@felipecesar.me)
What are your plans for the next year?
To finish establishing my tattoo shop (we’re in the middle of a renovation) and to travel around a bit more doing what I love most.
What are you currently listening to?
There’s a few bands that are always on my playlist: Slint, Oiseaux Tempête, Godspeed you Black Emperor!, Explosions in The Sky, Melvins, OM, Earth and Eyehategod.
The stoner/doom classics are always heartwarming: Sleep, Electric Wizard, Acid King and Kyuss.
My music taste is a bit of a mess, but that’s that.
What do you do when you aren’t tattooing?
I’ve been handling with the tattoo shop renovations lately, but I usually squeeze my cats a lot (haha) meet up with some close friends and watch movies.
