Q&A with Orla Hunter

Meet Orla Hunter. Freelance art director and designer by day

She Takes out her frustrations with sharp blades and pliable material by night.

She’s a Gemini but doesn’t believe in astrology or getting up before 9am.

We asked her some questions so you could observe for a few minutes, what happens on the inside of her brain.

Name: Orla

Occupation: Freelance digital art director and cat slave

What inspired your artworks for 5x5: I always wanted to be a vet you see, but my silly Art-brain cannot fathom Maths and Science, so all I can do is artistically (and crudely) explore animal anatomy. I find skulls rather fascinating. Each skull is so different, yet so similar.

What mediums did you use: I started messing around with linocutting and relief printing about a year ago because I wanted to make neat and pretty little repeat pattern stamps for fabric, and become rich by selling my designs on Etsy.

This obviously did not go according to plan.

My style is far from neat and pretty. So by accident, I discovered that I really enjoyed making larger, dramatic and hectic linocuts that were the opposite of cute.

Everything is done by hand. I carve the lino with woodcutting tools, roll the ink on the plate with a brayer and use brute hand force to press the inked image on to paper. The process is time-consuming and can only be described as a labour of love (and sometimes hate, and pain, and much swearing).

What are you listening to: Whatever Deezer tells me to. Which apparently seems to be Sisters of Mercy, Dan Auerbach, Chelsea Wolfe, Lamb of God and Astral Projection.

What are you watching: Bates Motel on Netflix

What are you reading: Snuff by Terry Pratchett

What is your favourite English word:  Banana

Best childhood cartoon and why?  My Little Pony. In fact it’s still my favourite cartoon, and I own an incredibly large amount of My Little Ponies from the 80s to present day. And I’m glad that they sell adult MLP pyjamas at Pick n Pay clothing dammit!

Why? Because ponies. I like ponies, I own 2 real life ponies. Also pretty colours

All of Orla’s Linocuts are available for purchase in store at 53 6th street Parkhurst or on our website here:  email for more information
